JOINING PROCESS SELECTION

Questions:

  1. What are the principle methods that I have to chose from for joining materials?
  2. I have a shop drawing that specifies weld bonding for a lap joint.  Exactly what is weld bonding?
  3. The job I am bidding on has a specification requiring the use of braze welding on the thicker material and weld brazing on the thinner material.  Are they the same process?  If not what's the difference?
  4. What are some factors that should be considered when selecting a materials joining method?
  5. What are the main factors which will determine the outcome of any materials joining attempt?
  6. I am considering selecting the gas tungsten arc process for use on a job I am bidding on.  What are some advantages and disadvantages of using this process?
  7. What's a good all around welding process to select for use in a welding shop?
  8. What's a hybrid joining process?
  9. I have an application requiring a deep penetrating narrow weld.  I am looking at the laser and electron beam welding processes as possible choices.  What are some advantages and disadvantages of each process?
  10. Can switching from a continuous mode laser to a pulse mode help to reduce the heat affect on the material being cut.
  11.   For high reflectivity materials, which is better, the carbon dioxide laser or the Nd:YAG laser?
  12. In general for joining aluminum by the laser process, which type of laser is better, carbon dioxide or Nd:YAG laser?
